PSY-2024 The Psychology of Prejudice and Stereotyping - 10 ECTS

Course content

The course is designed to broaden the knowledge of the psychology of prejudice and stereotypes. Our knowledge of stereotypes and prejudice is constantly changing and developing. In this course, we critically examine both classical and modern research in the field, on the basis of a recent research-oriented textbook. The themes covered in the textbook represent a wide range of problems in the field, included basic problems as well as phenomena that apply for specific, stigmatized groups. The themes covered are the forming and maintenance of stereotypes, the changing of stereotypes and possibilities for reducing prejudice. Recent research on cognitive processes within inter-group perception will be emphasized.

Content learning: In this course, stereotypes and prejudice, their development and their consequences will be discussed in detail.

Skill learning: This course will help students develop their critical reading and efficient writing skills on a social psychological topic. These skills are not only essential in academia, but also beneficial in a wide range of occupational areas.


Objectives of the course

Successful completion of the course will lead to the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge: Students will learn to

  • describe and define the concepts of stereotyping and prejudice and their interrelationship
  • describe and define factors in the forming and maintaining stereotypes
  • describe how stereotypes are activated and applied
  • explain the relationship between prejudice and personality
  • describe and define certain forms of stereotypes: ethnic minorities and sexism
  • describe how prejudices can be changed.

Skills: Students will have developed their ability to

  • critically read scientific articles, identify the main arguments, evaluate the used methods, and critically interpret the results
  • write a short and efficient summary about a research topic and engage in productive discussions

General competence: Students will have developed their ability to

  • work independently
  • write on a high scientific standard

Language of instruction and examination

The lectures and the exam questions will be given in English, but students will be allowed to answer the exam questions in Norwegian. Coursework-assignments can be writing in Norwegian or English.

Teaching methods

Lectures, 2 hours each.

Each student must write one assignment in the first weeks of the semester. Based on the feedback the students receive, they have to edit this assignment and then hand it in again. The students will choose the topic of the assignments themself. The assignments must be approved in order to take the final exam. The assignments may be written in either English or Norwegian. The students will receive all further details in class.


Re-sit examination

If the students get the grade F, re-sit exam will be given the following semester.
