MAT-3213 Climate Dynamics - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course is included in the Master's degree program in Mathematical Sciences and in the Master's degree program in energy, climate and environment. It is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program, also to exchange students upon approval of the Department of mathematics and statistics.

Admission requirements

Bachelor of science degree in mathematics or physics or equal. Application code is 9371.

Course content

The course introduces mathematical and statistical methods that are applied to the dynamics of the climate system. Topics covered include the Earth's energy balance, temperature distribution, ocean circulation patterns such as El Niño, and the carbon cycle. Among the mathematical and statistical techniques presented are dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, Fourier analysis, conservation laws, regression analysis, and extreme value theory.

Objectives of the course

Students will acquire knowledge about the conceptual models that capture important aspects of the Earth's climate system and the mathematical and statistical techniques that can be applied to their analysis. The course will prepare for research work associated with MSc thesis in climate dynamics.

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

Lectures: Approx. 40 hours. Exercises: Approx. 30 hours including computer assignments.
