INE-3607 CAD/CAM - 5 ECTS
Course content
Comprehensive consideration of both basic terms, relations, and the whole of the topic as well as actual research in the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) to generate data-integrated holisms of close-to-manufacturing engineering design, process and operations planning, of manufacturing and quality engineering. Computer aided geometric modelling and production engineering optimization of both products and the corresponding manufacturing processes. Mathematical basics for product modelling, exemplary skills in using advanced computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software systems to generate 3D-CAD models for free-form objects, create engineering drawings for models as basis for production and plan production process. The main topics in this course will include:
- Engineering product specification
- Mathematical basics for product modelling
- CAD- Basic part modelling
- CAD- Geometric modelling (solid and surface)
- Design for manufacturing and assembly
- Computer aided engineering drawing and orthographic projection
- Numerical control programming
- CAM- Based virtual and rapid prototyping
- Basic tooling and fixturing for production process
- Product life cycle management
Objectives of the course
The course aims at establishing understanding of the basic knowledge about principles of CAD and CAM systems on an intermediate level. It will serve as the foundation for the proficiency needed to create a process cycle from concept to production at part and assembly level and understanding how each part of the cycle influences the decisions made during the process cycle. The process cycle here defined as the design based on mathematical principles, engineering drawings that provides instructions for manufacturing and computer-assisted programming of manufacturing. In addition, an introduction to practical manufacturing.
Knowledge and understanding:
- Use engineering mathematics related to geometry to understand CAD/CAM concepts.
- Acquire fundamental understanding of the principles of CAD/CAM, including engineering drawing, geometric and surface modelling and feature based design
- Apply CAM principles to perform computer aided numerical control programming
- Apply CAD/CAM concepts to product design and manufacturing
- Use CAD/CAM software to realize product design.
Skills:
- Distinguish the product specification methods
- Construct 2D and 3D part CAD models
- Distinguish different computer aided design modelling methods
- Draw engineering design and orthographic projections
- Construct process plans for 3D geometric parts
- Recall the need of design and manufacturing integration.
Competence:
- Passing the course will provide students with basic competence for computer aided design and manufacturing.
