Center for Arctic Humanities

The Center for Arctic Humanities (ArcHum) coordinates various research environments at UiT The Arctic University of Norway to promote interdisciplinarity, creativity, and innovation. ArcHum is a strategic initiative bringing together over 20 research environments spread across many departments, faculties, and campuses to strengthen collaborative relationships and make ongoing and emerging research within Arctic humanities visible.

Events

This session at the Arctic Frontiers Conference 2026 presented innovative research initiatives from UiT’s Center for Arctic Humanities (ArcHum). Four research environments highlighted critically environmental and societal challenges and demonstrated how transdisciplinary research projects driven by the arts and humanities are addressing pressing global issues and foster Arctic preparedness. By applying creative methods and engaging with local and indigenous knowledges, these projects explore sustainable futures for the Arctic and beyond.

Wednesday at the Museum

The Arctic University Museum of Norway has introduced an innovative concept to rethink how they engage with their audiences. "Wednesday at the Museum" is a monthly evening event that transforms the museum into a hub of culture, science, and social connection. The concept is simple yet effective: one Wednesday evening each month, the museum opens its doors to the public for a special program that changes every time. From exhibitions to interactive events, the museum offers a diverse range of activities designed to appeal to a wide audience. Visitors can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, explore the museum’s exhibitions, and participate in engaging activities.

Philosophical conversations

Philosophical Conversations is open to everyone. We have been running since autumn 2009, and the conversations take place at Skarven Bar every other Saturday between 11:15 and 13:00. You can of course buy food and drinks. The meetings are announced the week before through an email list and on Facebook.

Philosophical Conversations is an independent forum, but we who organize are or have in various ways been affiliated with the University of Tromsø. The conversations are wide-ranging and have a philosophical focus, but you don't need to know academic philosophy to participate. The language used is accessible and informal, not like a university seminar.

Arctic Sun Celebration / Polar Night Celebration

UiT's Arctic Sun Celebration and Polar Night Celebration are annual events held in late April and November at UiT The Arctic University of Norway (Campus Tromsø) to mark the beginning of the two-month light and dark season. The event brings together students and staff for musical performances, lectures on Arctic topics and traditional food, often focusing on themes our researchers are currently working on.
