Māori ECE researchers guests from Aotearoa New Zealand
Dr. Ngaroma Willams and co-workers from University of Canterbury (ANZ) came to campus Alta to learn about Sámi kindergartens.
Carola Kleemann and Veronica Bergan were honored to host Māori ECE researchers from University of Canterbury in Alta and Karasjok 16th to 18th of September. Dr. Ngaroma Williams, Dr. Crissy Willams and Dr. Rikke Betts came to learn and experience how Sámi kindergartens worked with Sámi language and culture with the children.
We were warmly welcomed to Guolban mánáidgárdi in Karasjok and Guovddáš mánáidgárdi in Alta. In addition we had a trip to see the rock art at Alta museum and the Sámi parliament in Karasjok.
The last day Dr. Ngaroma Williams had a guest lecture at campus Alta entitled "Te reo Māori a heritage language for Aotearoa New Zealand’s teaching profession". The lecture can be seen here.
We have already applied for funding at the Norwegian Research Counsil to collaborate on comparative studies on indigenous issues in Norway and ANZ. We were lucky to see the Northern light the last nigh which we interpret as a good sign for further collaboration!
