Teachers shaping Society
Temporary exhibitionAn exhibition to celebrate the bicentennnary
of teachers’ colleges in Norway.
Everyone remembers a good teacher! This year marks 200 years since Norway’s first teacher training college opened—which happened in the north. The Seminary at Trondenes near Harstad trained teachers for both Norwegian and Sami speaking communities. The programme later moved to Tromsø, where it is still found, today a part of UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
The museum celebrates the bicentennial anniversary with this exhibition about the teacher’s role in society, past and present. We all have memories of our school days and our teachers, but perhaps we are not equally familiar with the challenges facing schools today?
Drawing on the experiences of teachers in the past—including darker chapters such as the Norwegianisation policy and the teachers’ strike during the Second World War—this small exhibition takes a closer look at who the teacher was, who the teacher is, and who the teacher may become in the future.
