AIMS/LEARNING OUTCOMES

and the political and institutional aspects.
Furthermore, the programme aims to add to
the skills of the students to identify, analyse,
explain and solve legal problems; both on

will be a special focus on the relevance and
application of the Law of the Sea to the
Arctic.
The objective is to be achieved through
active participation of the students during

students and teachers identify and discuss
legal questions. Students are also encourged
to hand in papers during the courses to
develop their knowledge on subjects and
their analytical skills.

Programme description
The Master’s programme offers in-depth
understanding of the key issues informing
the field of peace and conflict studies. It
provides interdisciplinary insights into
the nature and causes of conflicts, as well
as efforts at building peace and restoring
confidence in institutions in conflict-affected
societies. It actively recruits students from
Nordic and non-Nordic countries to create
and promote cross-cultural teaching and
learning experiences.
The programme draws upon the history
and geography of the city of Tromsø in
the relatively peaceful Far North to bring
innovation to peace and conflict studies.
With a long history of working towards
peaceful co-existence among local ethnic
and cultural groups, the region provides a
unique setting for the study of ways of trans-
forming relationships between individuals,
groups and institutions from destructive to
constructive bonds.
In the first year, teaching is intensive as core
debates and perspectives are addressed
through compulsory courses: SVF-3021:
Integrated Peace and Conflict Studies,
SVF-3022: Culture, Conflict and Society, SVF-
3023: Project Seminar, SVF-3024: Conflict
Resolution and Conflict Transformation.
The second year focuses mainly on master’s
thesis projects. These thesis projects are
designed by the students themselves de-
pending on their interests and experiences.
It is possible to collect data from any part
of the world to support such self-selected
thesis projects.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The programme prepares students for
exciting careers in government agencies, aid
organizations, NGOs, community reconstruc-
tion and development, media and research.
