PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Master´s program in Visual Cultural Stu-

about people’s life-worlds and cosmologies
based on the use of qualitative social science
research methods and documentary film.
Film is an essential tool in the teaching, the
research process and the dissemination of
knowledge. The exam films produced at VCS
are well known for their quality. Every year
several films are selected for international
documentary film festivals.
The students at the Master’s program
follow compulsory courses, and conduct
an individual research project, consisting of
fieldwork, writing a Master thesis and
making an ethnographic film. VCS places
cameras, editing facilities as well as technical
and filmic support for the film making at the
students’ disposal.

Programme description
The Master’s programme is an international
graduate programme in comparative
indigenous studies. It is based upon the
accumulated research and knowledge at the
University of Tromsø regarding the Sami and
other indigenous peoples within the social
sciences, humanities and law. The thematic
focus of the master
’
s programme is the
emergence of the international indigenous
movement, the historical experiences and
contemporary context that indigenous
people experience across the globe.
Most courses are obligatory, with some
additional courses that can be chosen on
the basis of the interests of the individual
student as a preparation for the Master

base from which the individual student may
choose a relevant topic for the Master
