DESCRIPTION OF DEGREE
PROGRAMME
Master of Philosophy in Theoretical
Linguistics covers graduate level studies in
theoretical linguistics, and is to be seen as an
extension of work at the Bachelor level. The
programme places special emphasis on the
formal aspects of grammar, in particular
syntax and phonology. The approach to
these disciplines relies on comparative
studies of many languages. Students will
develop insight into the structure of
language, comparative aspects of linguistic
research, social and geographic variation,
the historical development of languages and
language acquisition.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The programme provides a foundation
for work in fields as diverse as teaching,
programming, administration, industry or
media. The core goal of the programme,
however, is to prepare students for study at
PhD level.

Master of Philosophy in English Linguistics

linguistics, and is to be seen as an exten-
sion of work at the Bachelor level. The
programme places special emphasis on the
formal aspects of grammar, in particular
syntax and phonology. The programme has
a strong comparative component, although
the study of English naturally maintains a
central place in the programme. Students
will develop insight into the structure of lan-
guage in general and of English in particular.
Furthermore, students will be introduced
to social and geographic lingual variations
and the historical development of English, as
well as English language acquisition.

BESKRIVELSE AV STUDIET
Studiet gir deg grunnleggende kunnskaper i
økonomi og i ett fremmedspråk.

• Spansk
• Tysk
Vær oppmerksom på at tysk kun har
oppstart annethvert år.
Språkkunnskaper tilsvarende fordypning fra
videre­gående skole anbefales.
UiT tilbyr innføringskurs i alle språkene som
inngår i studieprogrammet, bortsett fra i
engelsk.
For studieretninger i et språkfag:
Første semesteret tar du ex.phil. og
­SOK-0001. Skal du ta fransk, russisk, spansk
eller tysk, må du ta et innføringsemne
FRA-0100/RUS-0100/SPA-0100/TYS-0100
i første semester. Velger du engelsk som
språk tar du ex.fac som emne. Videre tar du
språk i to semester og samfunnsøkonomi/
bedriftsledelse i to semester.
Bedriftsøkonomi, markedsfag og ledelse
er hovedelementene i studieretningen i
bedriftsledelse, mens mikro- og makro-
økonomi er basis i samfunnsøkonomi. Ved
valg av økonomiske studieretninger skal
studentene velge språk og ta språkemner i ­
3. og 4. semester.
Språkemnene fastlegges av det aktuelle
faget og er identisk med tilsvarende
­språkemner i andre bachelorgrader.
JOBBMULIGHETER
Studiet er for deg som ønsker en inter­
nasjonal karriere hvor det kreves spesial-
kompetanse i språk og økonomi. Kombi-
nerer du studiet med praktisk-pedagogisk
utdanning, kan du jobbe som lærer.
