PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The master’s programme comprises a

master’s thesis of 60 ECTS in addition to

mandatory courses and a special curriculum

amounting to 60 ECTS. These are dependent

upon the speciality chosen.

The following disciplines are offered:

• Algebra

• Analysis/differential geometry

• Applied mathematics

Some of the special fields include crypto

graphy, number theory, elliptic curves,

algebra, differential geometry, complex

analysis, non-linear waves and dynamical

systems. In applied mathematics thesis

topics may relate to plasma physics, optics,

mathematical ecology and bioinformatics.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Many mathematicians teach at universities,

colleges and in secondary schools. Others

work in private industries such as petroleum,

finance, communications and computer

security.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AND

EXAMINATION

The language of the study program is

English. This will apply to teaching, syllabus

material and examinations questions,

although the latter may be answered either

in English or a Scandinavian language.

BESKRIVELSE AV STUDIET

Studiet gir kunnskap i matematikk og stati-

stikk med muligheter for ulike fordypninger

som er teoretisk eller praktisk rettet. Du får

ferdigheter i matematiske resonnementer,

beregninger og statistiske metoder samt

kunnskap i å formulere og analysere model-

ler, trening i programmering, visualisering

og tolkning av resultater.

Studieretninger:

• Ren matematikk

• Statistikk

• Anvendt matematikk

De tre første semestrene består av obliga-

toriske emner i matematikk, statistikk og

fysikk i tillegg til innføring i informatikk og

programmering. I de tre siste semestrene er

valgmulighetene avhengig av studieretning.

Ren matematikk

og

Statistikk

har 60 sp

frie valgemner, noe som åpner for å kunne

velge andre fag i tillegg til statistikk eller

matematikk.

Anvendt matematikk

har et sterkt innslag

av fysikk, og bare et emne er valgfritt.

Studiet er nesten identisk med de tre

første årene i det femårige masterstudiet i

industriell matematikk.

Studiet kvalifiserer for opptak til master i

matematikk eller statistikk. Studieretningene

Anvendt matematikk og Statistikk kvalifi-

serer til opptak til fjerde studieår i Master i

industriell matematikk.

JOBBMULIGHETER

Vi anbefaler påbygging med mastergrad,

men det er fullt mulig å gå ut i yrkeslivet

etter bachelorgraden. Kombinerer du studiet

med praktisk-pedagogisk utdanning kan

du jobbe som lærer. Andre muligheter

er innenfor bank og finans, forsikring og

teknologibedrifter.

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The master’s programme comprises a

master’s thesis of 60 ECTS, 20 ECTS manda-

tory courses in computerintensive statistics

and multivariable statistical analysis, and

four courses 40 ECTS of electives or special

curriculum. The master’s thesis, electives

and special curriculum enable students to

specialise in different areas such as climate

statistics, biostatistics and medicine statistics

among others.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Candidates with a master’s degree in

statistics are in demand, and typically work

with people from other fields in rese-

arch institutions, consultancies, insurance

companies, banks, industry, oil compa-

nies, education, advanced technology and

software development.
