This year marks the solar maximum, the peak in the 11 year cycle of solar
activity and the possibility of spectacular auroral displays. There have never
been as many tourists coming to Tromsø to see the northern lights as there
are now. The University of Tromsø has a series of programmes that help
ensure these tourists are offered high quality guide services.
Per Helge Nylund, a communication
consultant at the Tromsø Museum,
says Tromsø is seeing an increase in the
number of aurora borealis tourists. This
is partly because major newspapers such
as The Washington Post have featured
articles about the aurora in northern
Norway, and partly because of the amaz-
ing photos and videos that have gone
viral via social media.
