I'm honored to welcome you to this issue of
Labyrint
, in which several of my colleagues
at the University of Tromsø share stories
from their research results. My elected term
as Pro Rector for Research & Development
is drawing to a close, and the projects you'll
see in the following pages remind me once
again about the importance of constantly
focusing on creating the right context, so
that researchers in turn can constantly focus
on the content.
Those of us engaged in
university leadership
have to communicate a
vision of the specialness
of our institution. At
the University of Trom-
sø, we have a particular
responsibility to study
the high north. You'll
learn lots about that
in the following pages,
ranging from the health benefits of eating
reindeer meat, to the adaptions bats make
so they can survive in the north. You'll read
about the wonders of Stone Age settlements
in our region, and the bravery of some Sami
politicians.
Although our situation in the north affects
our choice of research topics, we also must
educate the population of the north on
everything. As one of only four classic
research universities in Norway, we cover
many fields. You'll get a glimpse here of our
breadth as you read about how we study "old
diseases" such as leprosy, and how we study
new bastions of sexism in popular culture.
But whether it's the survival
of trees in the Ice Age or
how quickly you react to
something you're afraid
of, all of the research we
do serves society, locally,
nationally and internation-
ally. We are motivated by
our desire to understand
and by our desire to com-
municate what we think we
know, both to our students
and to you!
The importance of
research
