The Center for Saami Lexicography at UiT produces dictionaries for the Saami languages.
The Center for Saami Lexicography has now expanded with several new staff members. This was marked by a joint week-long workshop.
We organized a workshop on monolingual dictionaries to launch an expanded Center for Saami Lexicography. It was held at UiT from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The Center’s new staff members and associates met for the first time. Klara Sjo came from Bergen and shared her knowledge, experience, routines, and working methods from the lexicographical community at the University of Bergen. We discussed challenges involved in compiling monolingual dictionaries for Indigenous languages and learned how to use the work interface and other technical tools. We also discussed ways to improve and streamline the work interface, established working procedures and regular meeting times, and began writing entries for the monolingual North Saami dictionary. The next gathering is scheduled for December.
