CHANCES

CHANCES (Consortium on Health and Ageing: Network of Cohorts in Europe and the United States) ble finansiert av Europakommisjonen innenfor det syvende rammeprogrammet, og har som mål å kombinere og integrere pågående befolkningsstudier for å finne aldringsrelaterte helseegenskaper og determinanter for sunn aldring.

Prosjektperiode: 08.02.2010- 22.01.2015

CHANCES-prosjektet fokuserer på fire grupper av kroniske sykdommer og tilstander (kreft, hjerte- og karsykdommer og diabetes, osteoporose og brudd, og kognitiv funksjon og demenslidelser) som er store bidragsytere til sykdomsbyrden hos eldre.

CHANCES forskningskonsortium består av 16 partnere og 2 samarbeidspartnere, med Tromsøundersøkelsen som en av partnerne. Prosjektet ble koordinert av «Hellenic Health Foundation». Aldringen av verdens befolkning er en av de største globale utfordringene i dette århundret. For mange mennesker er alderdommen assosiert med sykdom.

Utfordringen som følger av befolkningsaldring gjør det nødvendig å sikre at de ekstra årene i livet er så gode som mulig, uten begrensninger i helse- og sosiale muligheter. Eldres evne til å bidra til samfunnet bør aldri undervurderes, og ingen kunstige eller unødvendige barrierer bør begrense dem.

WHO har understreket at sunn aldring går utover unngåelse av sykdom og funksjonshemming. Vellykket aldring defineres som aldring som innebærer frihet fra funksjonshemming sammen med høy kognitiv, fysisk og sosial funksjon. Eldre har visse behov som må tas hensyn til, og regjeringer, helsesystemer og allmennheten bør få detaljert informasjon om disse. Derfor er godt definerte helsebestemmende faktorer for aldring og dens funksjonelle resultater avgjørende for å forbedre den generelle helsen og livskvaliteten til eldre. Videre er gyldige og presise data om helsekarakteristikker til aldrende befolkninger avgjørende for å estimere deres sosiale og økonomiske innvirkning.
