The ECOSCREEN project, “EnhanCed FibrOus compoSite Concrete with improved Radiation shiElding properties for Energy applications and waste maNagement”

The project participants include two Ukrainian scientists from two research institutes in Ukraine as well as partners from Riga technical University, Latvia, Tartu University, Estonia, The Arctic University of Norway, Norway and Lithuanian Energy Institute, Lithuania.

The objective of ECOSCREEN project is to develop the new concrete composite materials reinforced by modified basalt fiber with various types of neutron absorbers for nuclear energy and nuclear waste management applications. Basalt fiber is eco-friendly material produced from natural basalt rock. The use of basalt fiber as an additive to concrete allows to create a new eco-friendly concrete composite material for nuclear industry. Basalt fiber increases mechanical properties and longevity of concrete in nuclear installations while, reducing environmental risks at the same time.

The ECOSCREEN project aims to develop a methodology adding neutron absorbers into basalt fiber, and to produce the samples of modified basalt fiber with different neutron absorbers. The project also aims to assess the neutron and gamma radiation shielding properties of ordinary and heavy concretes reinforced with the modified basalt fiber.

Financial/grant information:

The ECOSCREEN project awarded EU funding through EURIZON fellowship programme. The funding is for the Ukrainian scientists, EU participants are participating as consultants.
