NOVA/OsloMet, in collaboration with the Department of Social Education at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, will carry out a pilot study during the winter and spring of 2024, on the living conditions of adults with Down syndrome. Firstly, we will develop a questionnaire with questions and response options, as well as a methodological design for conducting a survey, together with co-researchers with Down syndrome. Secondly, we will conduct the survey among 15 adults with Down syndrome.

The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge that can improve the opportunities for adults with Down syndrome to participate in various areas of life. Firstly, we will provide knowledge on how to survey living conditions and quality of life among adults with Down syndrome. Secondly, the study will provide knowledge about the living conditions of a small selection of adults with Down syndrome. These will be discussed in light of previous surveys on living conditions among people with developmental disabilities, as well as the Norwegian Bureau of Statistics' (SSB) surveys on living conditions in the general population.

This pilot study will contribute knowledge on:

  • How to conduct a survey study where adults with Down syndrome themselves can answer questions about how they are doing.
  • How a selection of adults with Down syndrome have responded to certain areas of living conditions.

The study is limited to encompass the following areas of living conditions:

  • Housing and local environment
  • Education and daytime activities
  • Leisure
  • Social network
  • Mental health
  • Health and care needs
  • Safety
  • Self-determination
  • Quality of life
