BlueArc - Arctic Blue Carbon: Opportunities from expanding kelp forests (RCN)

The primary objective of BlueARC is to close key knowledge gaps in our understanding of carbon cycling in arctic kelp forests to assess opportunities for these coastal ecosystems to provide expanding carbon sinks

Our project poses 3 research questions:

  1. How do subarctic to Arctic biophysical gradients shape kelp standing biomass, detritus production and fate?
  2. How will dominant biological processes affect kelp carbon dynamics in the future Arctic?
  3. What is the likely importance of arctic kelp forests as carbon sinks now and in the future?
