Nursing and Nursing process in practice studies in nursing education – a document analysis

The purpose of this project is to examine how the nursing profession and the nursing process are presented in the formal documents of nursing education.

Background: In the spring of 2018, the University of South-East Norway (USN) initiated the establishment of a National Network for research into practice studies in nursing education in Norway which is in a restructuring phase. New study plans, subject plans and associated documents have been developed in line with the learning outcome descriptions from Guidelines for Nursing Education (RETHOS). Nursing constitutes an extensive and complex area of practice with several measures and approaches within a wide area and a wide spectrum of severity, which can make it difficult for nurses to stay focused on their responsibilities and concerns. Good knowledge and understanding of the nursing profession, represented by nursing theories and how these are applied and give direction to practice, is of great help, but seems to have a minor focus in today's nursing education and nursing practice.

Research questions:

  1. How is the nursing process presented in the documents related to practice studies?
  2. How is nursing presented in documents related to practical studies?

Method: Document analyses of study plans, subject plans and assessment tools for practice-related subjects using thematic analysis.
