Grand Meeting 2006 in Solf

The role of syntactic theory in the SAND and Edisyn projects

Olaf Koeneman & Marika Lekakou (Meertens Instituut)

We will discuss what role syntactic theory, and in particular the generative framework, has played in the SAND-project. Although this project was not couched in one particular framework and involved a collaboration of dialectological, generative and typological linguists, we will discuss the specific contribution that generative syntax has made in the data gathering. In addition, we will show how that has led to Dutch dialects making a significant contribution to the theory of syntax. In the second part, we will present the Edisyn project, which focuses on doubling constructions. We will discuss the relevance of these phenomena for syntactic theory, discuss concrete proposals and problems, as well as some initial generalizations.
