Type of course

The course is optional for students taking a master’s degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. It is also open for single-course students with relevant backgrounds. The course requires attendance on campus.

Course contents

This course introduces students to Marine Planning with a particular focus on fisheries and aquaculture development. Drawing on theories of sustainability and governance, the course provides a conceptual foundation for understanding the complexity of marine planning processes. In particular, the course emphasizes the social and institutional dimensions of planning.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent in social sciences, economics, biology or a combination of these subjects. An average grade of at least C is required in the bachelor's degree.

Objective of the course

Knowledge: 

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the key theories and concepts in marine planning, including sustainability and governance
Describe the main stages, processes and tools employed in marine planning
Identify and analyze the main challenges facing marine planning, particularly those related to fisheries and aquaculture development
Analyze the social and institutional dimensions of marine planning, including stakeholder participation, coordination, and legitimacy

Skills:  

Apply relevant social science theories to real or simulated marine planning cases
Analyze and interpret marine plans and assess their social implications
Formulate and investigate social scientific questions related to marine planning using relevant academic literature
Develop and communicate structured and evidence-based arguments in written and oral formats

General competency:  

Critically reflect on sustainability and governance in marine planning processes
Integrate social scientific perspectives to interdisciplinary discussion on marine planning
