Course contents

This course is appropriate for master's students in pure mathematics. Covers group theory beyond Algebra 1, commutative rings, modules, and field theory.

Admission requirements

Bachelor of science degree in mathematics or equal.

Objective of the course

The candidate shall:

obtain solid knowledge in selected topics in theory of groups, commutative rings, modules, and field theory, going beyond the material covered in Algebra 1.

be able to demonstrate understanding and how the mentioned concepts and topics interact.

be able to solve concrete problems in group, ring, and field theory.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction and the syllabus is English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

Lectures: Approx 40 h. Coursework: Approx 30 h.
