Course contents

The course delves into the history of the Sami people in modern times, with a focus on their political mobilizations: fighting against the assimilationist policies of nation-states, protecting Sami culture and language, seeking political representation, advocating for self-determination, land and water rights. It brings insights into the making of the Sami nation, the development of multicultural societies in Sápmi, the homeland of the Sami people, and the complex relationships between indigenous populations, ethnic minorities, nation-states and transnational developments. The historical events and their significance are used to discuss theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects related to the history of indigenous peoples. The course literature also addresses the main challenges in the historical scholarship on the Sami people, as well as the ethical considerations of research on indigenous issues.
