FRI-1130 Nature and culture in the Arctic - 5 stp

The course can not be taken as a single course.

The course is compulsory for students in the program Arctic Nature Guide.

Students already enrolled in Bachelor in Arctic friluftsliv and nature guiding or similar can take it as an elective.

Knowledge

The student

• Has basic understanding of geological and ecological processes relevant in the Arctic
• Demonstrates knowledge of northern cultures in general and local culture and history in particular
• Is familiar with conservation and legal guidelines supporting sustainability in nature-based tourism
• Has basic understanding of climatic processes and changes in the Arctic
• Has insight in the largescale meteorology for the Arctic in general and the local effects and weather prediction in special.

Skills

The student

• Can apply knowledge to recognize most common Arctic plants, animals and vegetation and their adaptions
• Has ability to recognize and explain basic geological features and processes
• Master relevant tools, techniques and styles to convey knowledge about the Arctic nature and culture to various groups.
• Can recognize vulnerable terrain types and cultural sites and thereby be able to undertake legal actions
• Can both interpret weather forecasts and natural signs to aid in practical trip planning and decision-making

General competence

The student

• Can use own ecological and cultural knowledge to provide guests with a sense of place
• Has broad knowledge about changes in climate and the impacts this has both on the natural environment and the northern communities
• Recognizes the importance of preserving the natural environment and supporting sustainable practises
• Can acquire a level of legal, ecological and cultural understanding appropriate to the environment in which they will operate
• Can educate guest about the fragility of Arctic ecosystems and the importance of minimizing impact during guided activities
