Vår 2026

SIK-2012 Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure - 10 stp

The course is administrated by

Institutt for teknologi og sikkerhet

Type of course

Can be taken as a singular course.

Course contents

The course introduces the most important topics in transmission and distribution of electric power.

The course starts with a review of the most essential electric circuit concepts, including three-phase systems, and power concepts. A short summary of electric-electric power conversion using power semiconductors (power electronics) is also given in this review.

The core of the course has three modules:

1. Power system analysis and transmission/distribution of electric power. Here, the general characteristics and structure of power systems and their components are described. The module also comprises power system analysis and quantitative descriptions of the components.

2. Use of electric energy. Here, energy usage is quantified, with emphasis on electric energy and usage patterns, as a basis both for analyzing sustainability and control. Methods to alleviate imbalances are described qualitatively and quantitatively.

3. Electricity markets, future power systems, and sustainability as part of the energy trilemma. Here, the basics of electricity markets are discussed, including interconnected systems and congestion. The ongoing energy transition is also treated, including smart grids and the energy trilemma, and sustainability.
