Course contents
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and lung diseases, are some of the leading causes of death worldwide.
This course will address the pathophysiology of- and the association between overweight and obesity, and the NCDs diabetes and cardovascular diseases, as well as mental- and oral health. Further, we will examine the evidence-based role of diet/nutrition in the prevention and treatment of these diseases/conditions.
The course will provide a foundation for critically evaluating different weigth reduction methods, and the students will conduct a diet experiment to gain experience in the matter. Further, the students will develop communication skill through practical exercises and learn to apply the Nutrition Care Process and communication methods. The course also includes a mandatory observational practice.
Objective of the course
After completing this course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge:
- Describe the prevalence, pathophysiology, symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic criteria, and dietary recommendations for treatment of overweight, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia/dyslipidaemia, and diet related cardiovascular diseases
- Explain how overweight and obesity increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
- Describe the evidence-based dietary recommendations used for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
- Describe, apply and refer to the national guidelines for overweight and obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease
- Describe the most common mental disorders associated with emphasis on eating disorders and substance use disorders
- Explain interactions between mental health and diet
- Explain how overweight, obesity, lifestyle disorders and mental health affect oral health
- Explain relevant communication methods, models and techniques
Skills:
- Recommend dietary measures at an individual- and population level for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity. diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
- Conduct dietary assessment and individualized dietary treatment for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
- Critically evaluate harm/benefit of various methods of weight reduction: weight reduction diets, physical activity and bariatric surgery
- Give dieatry advice for good oral health
- Be able to use communication methods, models and techniques to promote good communication
- Be able to structure a medical record
Competence:
- Plan and conduct dietary counselling and education for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, based on national guidelines
- Work systematically by using communication tools and tecniques in consultations
- Critically evaluate scientific and non-scientific nutritional information
- Participate in multidisciplinary work
