ENG-2106 Villains in English Literature - 10 stp

Course contents

We will trace the evolution of literary representations of evil from the Renaissance to the late 19th century by studying a number of key figures in the English canon from Dr. Faustus to the infamous Dracula. We will discuss the manner in which different historical contexts effect significant changes in the conceptualization and articulation of notions of antagonism and transgression. Similarly, we will test the manner in which the evolution of genre and the rise of the novel contribute to these marked fluctuations.

Admission requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification (generell studiekompetanse) or prior learning and work experience (realkompetanse).

A good grasp of oral and written English is recommended.

The course will be taught over thirteen weeks of two-hour seminar meetings. There will be teaching-free periods for academic supervision.
