Course contents

Practical examples will be taken from plant genomics, but the course is suitable for biologists in all fields. Topics of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics will be covered. The course will concentrate on data mining and the use of bioinformatics for the analysis of genes and proteins.

Students will work web-based for the course to perform computer based tasks and prepare a seminar talk on one of the subjects. The course takes place physically at UiT in Tromsø.


Admission requirements

Who can apply as a singular course student:

The course has 10 seats. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants will be ranked in this order: 1. PhD students at UiT 2. Participants in the Associate Professor programme at UiT (must hold a Master´s degree) 3. Registered PhD students from other universities 4. Applicants documenting that they have a Norwegian Master´s degree (or equivalent) The course will be cancelled if less than 4 participants.


Objective of the course

A web-based course aimed to give PhD students theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of functional genomics.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

4 h lecture. 5 h seminars. 18 h computer work (Web-based).
