FRI-1851 Friluftsliv in outdoor educational perspective - 5 stp

Only for exchange students at short term stay, matriculated at European institutions with an particular agrement regarding the subject.
The course is not open for other students.
Course contents
The course is practically oriented, based on a theoretical background. Through this course, the students shall acquire basic skills, knowledge and experiences connected to basic outdoor life activities in general, and winter outdoor life especially. Furthermore, the students will get insight into different traditions and perspectives of outdoor life (friluftsliv) They will be able to reflect upon and discuss the Norwegian outdoor life (friluftsliv) in the context of the outdoor traditions in their home countries. In the practical part, the students shall develop their ability to work together and to manage life in a natural winter environment. The students shall enhance their understanding for their own academic field in connection with outdoor life activities. This course will give an introduction into topics such as:
- The Norwegian education system and the Norwegian teacher education
- Friluftsliv as a cultural phenomenon and as a subject in school
- Outdoor life as an important part of the Norwegian culture
- Basic skiing techniques, both on and off trails and in ski play
- Hiking and camping in wintertime
- Safety and requirements connected to clothing, equipment and activities
- Safety in the outdoors; avalanche safety, first aid, emergency shelters
- Traditions connected to harvesting from the nature
- Nature knowledge
Admission requirements
Objective of the course
On successful completion of the course, students will have acquired the following overall learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competences:
Knowledge
The student have
- Knowledge about the traditions and contemporary way of outdoor life (friluftsliv) in Norway.
- Knowledge about rules, regulations and necessary skills connected to outdoor life activities wintertime.
- insight into nature as a learning environment.
- knowledge about leadership, safety and group dynamics in the outdoors.
Skills
The student is able to
- Manage basic cross country skiing.
- Practice basic winter outdoor life activities, such as winter camping, camp fire, outdoor cooking, use of special equipment.
- Travel off trail with adequate equipment.
General competence
The student
- Have a reflective understanding of nature and outdoor life (friluftsliv) as phenomenon, practice and learning concept.
- Is aware of the requirements concerning the competence and equipment for practising safe and environmentally friendly outdoor life in wintertime.
- Is able to reflect about outdoor life activities in comparison with the possibilities in the home country.
