BIO-3556 Marine Resource Biology and Technology - 10 stp

The course deals with the diversity, ecology and behavior of marine living resources as well as with the technologies designed to exploit and utilize them. Resources range from molecules to vertebrates and ecosystems, with emphasis on marine fisheries. A variety of technologies is considered, from biotechnology to material, gear and fishing boat designs, as well as fish finding electronics, IT and digital applications. Special consideration is given to principles of conservation and resource management, food safety and improved utilization of the catch, and reduction of environmental footprint. The need to adapt products to developing markets and consumer preferences, as well as to the social and cultural contexts is highlighted.

Participation in the course demands an active and investigative attitude from the student. The subject deals with the diverse topics at introductory level, but the inter-disciplinary synthesis is performed at higher level. The subject is therefore suitable for students with diverse backgrounds who enjoy inter-disciplinary challenges.

The course is organized in independent weekly modules that require integration during the project work. We favour active learning methods and a flipped classroom (blended) approach. This requires that students engage in self-study of basic concepts prior to practical classes.

A variety of learning methods are utilized, including physical and online lectures, seminars, practical labs, fieldwork, cruise and excursions. An obligatory short report performed by teams of students will help summarizing the content of each module.
