Course contents
The course treats traditional optics, waveguides and laser physics. Topics discussed are geometric optics, Gaussian beams, electromagnetic waves, integrated optics, optical fibers, optical amplification, laser theory and some laser systems. The students obtain practical experience through laboratory exercises.
Application deadline
Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester.
Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.
Admission requirements
Admission requirements are a Bachelor's degree in physics or similar education, including specialization in physics worth the equivalent of not less than 80 ECTS credits. Local admission, application code 9371 - singular courses at Master's level.
Objective of the course
Knowledge - The student:
- has good knowledge about general properties of light, beams and optical elements
- knows the structure and use of optical waveguides and fibers
- is familiar with resonators, optical amplifiers and lasers
Skills - The student is able to:
- describe the propagation, reflection and transmission of light rays and optical beams through optical elements
- apply Maxwells equations, in particular to analyze optical waveguides
- set up equations for resonators, optical amplifiers and lasers
- carry out basic optical measurements
- characterize optical waveguides
- measure the spectrum of a light source
General expertise - The student is able to:
- analyse optical problems
- interpret optical measurements results
- handle optical components and equipment
Language of instruction
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.
Teaching methods
Lectures: 45 hours Exercises: 30 hours Laboratory exercises: 10 hours.
The course is given in every 3rd semester if there is a sufficient number of students.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
