Course contents

The course views the Norwegian petroleum resources in a national, international, and especially Arctic framework. Arctic operations is commented in a both historic and potential future perspective. Norway is one of the few countries globally that has managed its natural resources, especially oil and gas, to the common best for the nation and future generations. The Norwegian model will be discussed, and especially the relationship between the private/company interests and the state`s interest in oil and gas activities is elaborated. The candidate will learn about the fiscal frames for oil and gas in Norway, and the role of this industry for the Norwegian economy. Energy systems related to oil and gas, and this compared to other types of energy carriers, is discussed.

Exchange students and Fulbright students: 15 April for the autumn semester.

UiT students: September 1st for the autumn semester.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission.

Objective of the course

Knowledge

The student has

understanding of the Norwegian model for management of oil and gas revenues, and how this model relates to other national models globally.
understanding of the principles of petroleum resource classification systems, and how they relate to the stages of resource development and potential value of petroleum.

Skills

The student can

separate and define the different roles of the authorities, the directorates, the operators and the suppliers in the exploration, exploitation, and management of oil and gas resources.
define, understand, and discuss the term "economic rent".
explain the difference between energy and energy carriers, and describe individual energy carrier trends.
discuss Arctic industry in an environmental, development and political context.

General competences

The student can

discuss and analyze the link between developments of society and energy consumption.
use relevant literature and analytical skills to solve relevant problems.
communicate solutions of relevant scientific problems in written form.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English and all the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English.

60 hours lectures/seminars.
