GEO-3120 Management of the Petroleum Resources - 10 stp

Course contents

The course views the Norwegian petroleum resources in a national, international, and especially Arctic framework. Arctic operations is commented in a both historic and potential future perspective. Norway is one of the few countries globally that has managed its natural resources, especially oil and gas, to the common best for the nation and future generations. The Norwegian model will be discussed, and especially the relationship between the private/company interests and the state`s interest in oil and gas activities is elaborated. The candidate will learn about the fiscal frames for oil and gas in Norway, and the role of this industry for the Norwegian economy. Energy systems related to oil and gas, and this compared to other types of energy carriers, is discussed.

Applicants from countries within EU/EEA: June 1st for the autumn semester.

Exchange students and Fulbright students: 15 April for the autumn semester.

UiT students: September 1st for the autumn semester.


Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English and all the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English.

60 hours lectures/seminars.
