DTE-3610 Finite Element Methods, Programming - 2.5 stp

Course contents
Finite element methods for partial differential equations. The course consists of the following topics:
- Representation of complex grometry
- data structures,
- mesh generation,
- basis functions,
- Building a stiffness matrix ,
- the load vector,
- a solver.
Application deadline
Applicants from Nordic countries: December 1st. Exchange students and Fulbright students: October 1st.
Admission requirements
A relevant undergraduate Bachelor Engineering program with minimum 25 credits mathematics, 5 credits statistics, 7,5 credits physics.

Objective of the course
On completion of the course the successful student is expected to have the following:
- Knowledge Be able to describe in words, the central terminology, definitions, ideas, results, and methods used in FEM programming (K1, K2).
- Skills Be able to use the knowledge to make a simple implementation and to analyse and prepare a general implementation (S1).
- General competence Know that numerical calculations based on theoretical analysis of the finite element method can be a tool in the study of partial differential equations and simulation, and use the relevant terminology to communicate about the results. (GC2).

Assessment
Form of assessment: Oral exam Grouping: Individual Grading will be done by using A-F grading scale, F is Fail.
