END-3608 Materials Selection in Product Design - 7.5 stp

The course is administrated by

Institutt for datateknologi og beregningsorienterte ingeniørfag

Type of course

For students at the Master's Degree Programme in Engineering Design. The course can be taken as a single course.

Course contents

The interaction between function, shape (geometry) and material selection in engineering design will be studied (especially in terms of mechanical design). Among other things, the following points are central to the discipline:

- Design Process

- Materials and material structures

- Selection of materials for components exposed to certain stresses

- Development of materials indices and the use of these

- Specific case studies

- Shape Factors

- Use available charts to select the right material for concrete products.

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: December 1st. Exchange students and Fulbright students: October 1st

Admission requirements

A relevant undergraduate Bachelor Engineering program with minimum 25 credits mathematics, 5 credits statistics, 7,5 credits physics

Application code: 9371

Objective of the course

Learning outcome:

After completing the course, the students will have knowledge in mechanical engineering design. The students will be able to:

- through a systematic method to choose the most suitable material and form in technical design of various products

- find the material indices of different problems and to use it to find the best materials

- analyze and find the failure mechanisms by using a failure mechanism chart

- understand what the shape efficiency is and use the shape factors to optimize different components or products

Language of instruction

Norwegian (guiding in English)

Teaching methods

Regular lectures, project work and video lectures will be used in the course.

For more information, see the course homepage in Canvas when you are enrolled in the course.

Assessment

Assessment

Oral presentation and examination by using Teams, Skype etc.

In order to attend the oral examination, the students must deliver a report based on tasks given in the course, that must be handed in electronically via Wiseflow one week before the examination. The student will obtain the grade "Pass" or "No Pass" on the basis of presentation/examination. The grading "Pass" will be given when the projects is minimum at the level equal to the grading letter "C".

There will not be arranged a re-sit/ continuation exam for this course.

Date for examination

Report hand in date 09.03.2022

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
