SVF-3907 Ethnographic Film Editing - 30 stp

Type of course
This course may be taken as a singular course.
Course contents
In the course the students will learn to create and convey anthropological knowledge by the use of film. The students will edit the video-material recorded during their fieldwork and will, by the end of the course, have produced an ethnographic film.
Application deadline
Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.
Admission requirements
This course may be taken as a singular course. Applicants must have completed the courses SVF-3101 and SVF-3102 or equivalent in order to be eligible for admission. Application code: 9371

Objective of the course
The students have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
- know how to explore a subject of social science interest through cinematic means
- can make a contribution to the understanding of research topics and themes through cinematic means
- can distinguish and reflect critically on own and other people¿s ways of knowing.
Skills
- be able to demonstrate technical skills in camerawork, sound, and editing
- be able to develop a consistent analytical argument based on fieldwork material
- be able to develop a consistent audio-visual narrative based on filmed material from own fieldwork
- be able to demonstrate basic research skills for the use of film as a means in the production and dissemination of ethnographic knowledge
General competence
- be able to implement and analyze visual, oral, corporeal and other systems of meaning
- be able to reflect an understand the narrative structure in film
- be able to make a research based ethnographic film
- be able to do the adequate research in the course of an film production.

Teaching methods
The teaching is organized in rough-cut screenings combined with lectures and seminars.
The students present their films as works-in-progress in compulsory rough-cut screenings. Students are given individual supervision throughout the film-editing process.
Assessment
The exam will consist of:
- A film (max. 30 minutes duration)
The exam will be assessed on an A-F grades scale. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. Retake exam is not offered for this course.
