MBI-3004 The biology of cancer - 10 stp

Type of course

The course is an elective course for students accepted to the Master´s program in Biomedicine, but is also open for single course students who meet the admission requirements.

Course contents

The course discusses the nature of cancer including an introduction to cancer pathology and clinical aspects of cancer. Central topics: Tumor viruses, cellular oncogenes, growth factors and their receptors, signaling pathways relevant to cancer development, tumor suppressor genes, the control of the cell cycle and apoptosis, cell immortalization, multistep tumorigenesis, genome integrity and cancer development, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis, tumor immunology and rational treatment of cancer.

Applicants from the Nordic countries: 1st of December.

Admission requirements

The course can be taken as a singular course by students with a Bachelor´s degree in Biomedicine or similar (180 ECTS).

Recommended prerequisites: Basic knowledge at University Bachelor level in cell and molecular biology and genetics.

Teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures, seminars, micro-lectures, group work and a laboratory exercise.

Assessment

The exam consists of two parts where each part counts 50% of the final grade:

Grades A-F (F - fail).

Coursework requirements

Re-sit exam/postponed exam

A re-sit exam/postponed exam will be arranged early in the following semester, for candidates who failed the essay or who, for valid reasons, were unable to attend.

Students will be able to re-sit the part-exam they failed (F) and keep the result for the part-exam they passed. Should students fail on the re-sit exam they must re-take the entire course next time the course is given.
