HIF-8008 Professional Skills in Linguistics - 5 stp

Type of course

This course is recommended as part of the compulsory credits in dissemination within the instruction component of the PhD programme in the humanities and social sciences. 

Course contents

This course gives a training in the professional aspects of linguistic research activity, including abstract writing, conference presentations (handout preparation, poster presentation, presentational style etc.) and clear academic writing. The different challenges of writing a research thesis as well as articles for peer reviewed journals will be addressed. Students will present their own material and get feedback within a workshop environment.

Admission requirements

Admission to a PhD-programme in linguistics.

Objective of the course

Students will gain a practical mastery of the activities they will be engaged in as professional academics within the field of linguistics.

The main educational goals are:

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical mock activities with lecturer feedback. 12 teaching hours in addition to 6 weeks of self study

Assessment

Regular attendance and participation in teaching activities. Final paper consisting of a presentation handout or power point together with a critical self-evaluation and summary of feedback received.

The examination is evaluated according to the pass/fail grading system. There will not be a re-sit exam for this course. The final paper is tied strongly to actual presentation during the course and the receipt of feedback.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
