Institutt for språk og kultur

Type of course

This course is intended for students in the master's programme in English literature and students in the master's programme in education year 8-13 (lektorutdanninga, studieretning engelsk). This course may be taken as a single course by students who qualify for admission to the MA programme in English Literature.

Course contents

Since the turn of the twenty-first century, criticism has reputedly become "post-theoretical." Critics have described the limits of critique and theorists the bounds of theory. This course examines the directions that literary and cultural criticism written in English is taking right now. How do critics relate to the highly-influencial theoretical work of the last decades of the twentieth century - the importation of "high theory" from France in the 1960s and 70s or the identity criticism of the 1990s? How are critics trying to re-engage readers outside of the academy? When students of literature look back at early 21st-century criticism decades from now, what will they see as the most important developments?
