The course is an integrated part of the IFM programme, but can be taken as a singular course.
Entrance requirements as for the M.Sc.programme in International Fisheries Management.
Course contents
- Governance, governability and interactive governance in theory and practice
- Ecosystem-based management in theory and practice
- Institutional theories and perspectives
- Coastal and ocean planning in theory and practice, including division of responsibilities, public and private partnerships
- Integrated coastal management in theory and practice, including conflict resolution and stakeholder participation.
- Marine Spatial Planning and protected areas in theory and practice
- Use of fisheries and aquaculture case studies.

The course is an integrated part of the IFM programme, but is also open for single course students with relevant background. Entrance requirements as for the M.Sc. programme in International Fisheries Management.
Objective of the course
The course will give students advanced knowledge in coastal planning and governance concepts, tools and practices. It will draw insights from multiple disciplines in analysis of key management challenges.
Knowledge and understanding: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have a clear understanding of the main challenges in coastal and ocean planning and governance. Focusing on fisheries and aquaculture issues, the course will provide knowledge of ways to address these challenges.
Skills: Students will be able to critically prepare and appraise issues of coastal and ocean planning and governance. This includes investigating planning and governance challenges and opportunities in concrete fisheries and aquaculture cases.
General competency: The students will become familiar with key concepts of coastal planning and governance, as well as gain a deeper understanding for the role of social science and multidisciplinary perspectives in coastal and ocean planning and governance.

Assessment
One-week home exam. The grading scale is A-F, where F is fail.
Coursework requirements:
- Prepare a fisheries management plan.
- Prepare a marine protected area plan.
- Participation and/or documentation of workshop dealing with ocean and coastal planning.
All work requirements must be fulfilled before you can sit for the final exam.
A re-sit exam will be arranged in the next semester.
Date for examination
The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
