KJE-2003 Introduction to analytical chemistry - 10 stp

Type of course

Theoretical and practical work. The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program, also to exchange students. The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course.

Course contents

The course will cover important theory and practical techniques for qualitative and quantitative work in a chemistry laboratory with emphasis on instrumental methods and relevant statistical methods for the treatment and evaluation of experimental data. An introduction to practical computational chemistry techniques will also be given.

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Applicants from outside the Nordic countries: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

It is a requirement that students have basic knowledge of chemistry and spectroscopy.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. The reports may be written in either English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

The course will be taught using a combination of theoretical pre-lab lectures (24 hours) and practical laboratory work (72 hours, 12 experiments)

Assessment

Each lab experiment must be followed up by writing a scientific report. The overall course grade is Pass/Fail based on an evaluation of a compendium of all the reports.

Full participation in laboratory course and pre-lab lectures is required. Passed all laboratory reports and hand-ins.
