Vår 2019

FYS-2000 Quantum mechanics - 10 stp

The course is administrated by

Institutt for fysikk og teknologi

Type of course

The course is available as a singular course. The course is also available to exchange students and

Fulbright-students.

Course overlap

FYS-113 Quantum mechanics 10 stp

Course contents

The course is concerned with the basics of quantum physics starting with the Bohr atomic model and its limitations. Schrödinger equation and wave functions will be introduced and applied to simple quantum mechanical systems in one dimension. Heisenberg's uncertainty relation will be shown as well as the tunneling and the formalism of quantum mechanics. Quantum systems in three dimensions and angular momentum will be described, and finally the hydrogen atom. The spin will be introduced and an explanation for the periodic system. Throughout the course elected examples for quantum effects in modern physics are given.

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring

semester.

Exchange students and Fulbright students: 15 April for the autumn semester and 1 October for the

spring semester.
