GEO-3104 Advanced Structural Geology - 5 stp

Course contents

The course deals with geometry and location of the most common deformational structures like folds, faults/shear zones and fractures and their relationship to strain and stress (forces) in the earth crust. Examples include structural elements and development of tectonic regimes.

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the fall semester.

Applicants from outside the Nordic countries: 15 April for the fall semester.


Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years duration, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other programme for basis of admission.

Objective of the course

After successfully completing the course, students should have a thorough understanding of geological structures and the processes of their formation. In addition, they will have a knowledge of the most important tools which are required for solving structural problems in geology.

Language of instruction

English.

Teaching methods

20 hours lectures and 18 hours exercises, 1-2 days of field excursion.

Assessment

3 hours written exam. Grading scale: Letter grades A-F, whereof F is fail.

Admittance to the examination requires approved course work.

A re-sit exam will be arranged for students who do not pass the examination for this course.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
