GEO-3135
Rock-slope failures: Geology, hazard and monitoring - 10 stp
The course is administrated by
Institutt for geovitenskap
Type of course
This course is available as a single course. GEO-3104, GEO-3118 and GEO-3128 is recommended as previous knowledge. This is a intensive course, with a theoretical part and a field excursion part in the fall, late August or early September.
Course contents
The course aims to give the students an overall understanding of landslide hazard and risk related to bedrock. This includes methods and technology used in investigations, hazard analysis and monitoring.
Application deadline
Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the fall semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 15 April for the fall semester.
Admission requirements
Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other program for basis of admission. Application code: 9371.
Objective of the course
Knowledge: The students will get a systematic presentation of theories, principles and practices which is the basis for analysis and considerations of stability, hazard and risk related to landslides in bedrock. Practical exercises and field investigations will give the students a systematic approach to the topic.
Skills: The course has a major focus om exercises and fieldwork in order to solve practical issues. This will put requirements to the students in form of practical and creative skills, including the ability to dissemination and communication. The course deliveries include an extensive report which requires these important skills.
Competence: Through a combination of lectures, practical exercises, and with a special focus on fieldwork, the students will get the possibility to develop both personal and social abilities. The topic imposes strict requirements to reflections, critical thinking and responsibility. The students will after the approval of the course, be able to work with landslide problems in the public and private sector. Furthermore, it will provide a good basis for further studies on PhD level within this topic.
Language of instruction
English.
Teaching methods
The course is 10 study points and is given over two weeks, late August or early September. It has one intensive theoretical part of one week (20 lectures and 10 hours exercise) and one week field course. The evaluation is performed thorough a delivery of an extensive report. The report has to contain an essay of a given topic and a systematic presentation of the field mapping and analysis performed in the field part.
Assessment
It will not be any school exam for the course. The students must deliver a report within two months after the finalization of the field course. It will be required relative extensive requirements for approving the report. There will not be arranged a re-sit exam for this course.Grading scale: Pass/Fail.
