GEO-3145 Arctic marine geology and geophysics workshop - 5 stp

Course contents

This course attempts to give more trust to marine geological/geophysical research, to enhance international cooperation, integration, and visibility of Norway's contribution to research in the Arctic. The research of AMGG focuses on the development of Arctic continental margins including genesis of glacigenic sediments; geohazards, paleoclimate and paleoceanography, energy and environment; tectonics and structural geology. The main study area is the fjords and continental margin of Svalbard, Northern Norway, the Barents Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the East Greenland margin. The aim is to arrange at least one new workshop every year on a relevant research topic, to keep students up-to-date on Arctic marine geological/geophysical research.

Objective of the course

To give an overview of relevant topics in Arctic marine geology and geophysics.

Language of instruction

English.

Teaching methods

15-25 lectures will be given in each workshop by AMGG scientists and invited specialists, in addition to discussions and seminars. A workshop lasts for about 5 days.

Assessment

A written report from the workshop (about 10 pages long) and a home assignment on a given subject (about 10 pages long).

Grading scale: Pass/fail.

Participation in one workshop is required to gain credits from this course.
