Course contents
This course is appropriate for masters students in pure mathematics. Covers group theory, commutative rings and modules and field theory.
Application deadline
Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Applicants from outside the Nordic countries: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.
Admission requirements
Bachelor of science degree in mathematics or equal. Recommended prerequsites is MAT-2300 Algebra 1. Application code is 9371.
Objective of the course
The candidate shall:
- obtain solid knowledge in selected topics in theory of groups, commutative rings, modules, and field theory, going beyond the material covered in Algebra 1.
- be able to demonstrate understanding and how the mentioned concepts and topics interact.
- be able to solve concrete problems in group, ring, and field theory.
Language of instruction
The language of instruction and the syllabus is English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Assessment
One oral exam counting 100%.
Assessment scale: Letter grades A-F.
Coursework requirements
A passing grade is required on the mandatory homework sets for permission to take the exam.

Kurset begynner med gjentakelsen fra kapittel 9 som skal være kjent fra det foregående kurset Algebra 1.
Etterpå omfatter programmet det meste av materialet fra kapitlene 10-14 med mulige tillegg fra kapittel 15 og begynnelse av kapittel 17.
