Knowledge:
After the course, the students will have basic knowledge and understanding of the following areas of general pharmacology and toxicology:
- drug nomenclature
- drug development
- how drugs and toxic substances are absorbed, distributed and reach their site of action (pharmacokinetics/toxicokinetics)
- how drugs and toxic substances are metabolized and excreted (pharmacokinetics/toxicokinetics)
- drug targets
- how drugs and toxic substances interact with their targets and mediate their action (pharmacodynamics/toxicodynamics)
- quantitative aspects of pharmacological/toxicological action, dose-response relationships and time-response relationships
- factors modifying the effects of drugs and toxic substances in individuals
- drug toxicity
- pharmacological/toxicological aspects of drug abuse
- how drugs and toxic substances alter physiological function
- classification of adverse effects and toxic reactions
- measurement of acute poisoning
- principles for treatment of toxicity
Skills:
The candidates should be able to understand and use general terms in pharmacology and toxicology, both orally and in written text.
