FSK-8005 Funding your research - 3 stp

To continue a scientific career after completing a PhD degree, a research grant may be an option. A good idea is needed, but not enough. This course will give insight to the evaluation process, how to interpret a research call and academic and administrative requirements needed to write successful research proposals.

Prior the the course, you are asked to submit a one page draft of your research idea. Work on your proposal after the first three course days, with support from an experienced mentor. The two last days will be spent on presenting your proposal, which enables instant feedback from your peers before the submission of a final draft (exam). You will also be the opponent of one of your peers proposal. The exam forms a solid basis for a future, real proposal.

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.

Holders of a Master´s degree must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma.

If more than 20 applicants, priority will be given as follows: 1. Participants admitted to the PhD programme at UiT 2. Participants in the Associate Professor programme (Førstelektorprogrammet) 3. PhD candidates from other universities 4. People with a minimum of a Master´s degree (or equivalent), who have not been admitted to a PhD programme. The course will be cancelled if there are less than 10 applicants.

Students in the final stages of their degree will be prioritised. Post Docs and researchers are welcome to apply.

Proficiency in English

Knowledge:

• Knowledge about the research proposal evaluation process
• Know the major sources for research grants
• Know the different types of research applications (e.g. open calls, targeted calls)
• Know the scientific requirements needed from the applicant and the application
• Know the administrative requirements
• Know common pitfalls
• Know how much time is required for writing a proposal
• know about funders requirements on open access to the research data and publications, and how to comply with those

Skills:

• how to interpret and answer an application  call
• how to formulate a research proposal
• how to set up a budget
• how to make a data management plan

General knowledge:

• Writing skills
• How to optimise a CV
• Give and receive constructive feedback in a group
• Understand the ethics and science philosophy behind open science, and why open science is becoming a requirement in research proposals

Lectures and seminars, presentation of your own research proposal and evaluating one of your peers proposal (three + two days intensive course).

Course dates: 30 October -1 November and 16-17 November.

Written exam: A solid draft of a research proposal, maximum 10 pages. Grade: Pass/Fail.

Coursework requirement: A one page draft of your own research proposal 10 working days in advance, presentation of own proposal and evaluation of another proposal. Minimum 80% participation on lectures, seminars and presentations is required in order to submit the exam.

Re-sit exam: No re-sit in this course.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
