PSY-3024 UiT Autism Seminar - 10 stp

Course contents
The aim of this course is to give students opportunity to immerse themselves in a topic that is not represented in other subjects at UiT. The purpose of the course is to give students a broader knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders in both a clinical and research perspective, but also in a social society perspective.
The lectures cover the following topics:
- An introduction to Autism (4 hours)
- Autism Clinical Assessment (2 hours)
- Social communication in Autism (2 hours)
- Treatments for Autism: Overview model of programs (2 hours)
- Pivotal response therapy Intervention (2 hours)
- Behavioural assessment and treatment in Autism (2 hours)
- Autism in infants and toddlers (2 hours)
- Social behaviour (2 hours)
- Autism in Adolescents and adults (2 hours)
- Parental perspectives and legal rights (2 hours)
- Sex differences in autism spectrum disorder (2 hours)

Admission requirements
BA -degree. The BA must have minimum average grade of C or better.

Objective of the course
Expertise within the theme Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), more detailed, the student should have the following knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge about the basic aspects of ASD regarding symptoms. "What is autism?"
- Explain how ASD manifests in infants, children and young adults with ASD.
- Basic knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, and measures/treatment.
- Explain different assessment methods and treatment.
- Explain attitudes to parents and families of children with ASD.
- Knowledge of the healthcare structure and children with ASD and their parents' rights as a result of diagnosis.
- Knowledge about national guidelines for evaluation, and rights to training and other practical measures.

10 page home exam. Grades are given on a scale from A - F. If the students get the grade F, a re-sit exam will be arranged the following semester.
Students are measured on knowledge, ability to integrate theory from textbooks and scientific articles, as well as format exam in APA format.
Date for examination
The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
