Objective of the course

Knowledge:

Have knowledge to understand mechanical system failure. Are able to understand the physical cause of failure due to creep, crack, corrosion, vibration, etc. Have knowledge on the countermeasures to prevent failure. Have knowledge on the electronic system failure. Are able to understand the physical cause of electronic device failure due to solder failure, IC failure, Corrosion etc. Have knowledge on the countermeasures to protect the electronic device. Have knowledge on software system failure. Understand the root cause of software failure such as bug, design defect. Understand some basic measurements on software safety. Have knowledge on the complex engineering system failure from industries such as oil and gas, railway, etc.

Skills:

A clear comprehension and understanding of the theoretical principles in mechanical, electronic and software system failure. An ability to introduce countermeasure to prevent failure.

General competence:

Understands the physics of engineering system failure and have general idea to prevent the failure. Have an ability to apply the learned knowledge to the complex industrial engineering system to improve the safety.

Teaching methods

42 hours lectures; 10 hours laboratory, exercise; Project.

Assessment

4 hours written exam. Letter grade A - F.

Candidates must pass both the project and the laboratory work to be able to attend the exam.

For the candidates who failed the exam, or who were unable to attend the final examination based on valid reasons, can have a re-sit exam/postponed exam early in the next semester.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
