BIO-8510 ARCTOS Marine ecological research cruise Spitsbergen and Barents Sea - 3 stp

Course contents
The course runs each second year and is based upon cruises with FF Helmer Hansen to the waters around Spitsbergen and the Barents Sea. The main subject will be winter ecology of the Arctic Ocean. Research questions relevant to the ARCTOS network will be studied in groups. The course also opens up for individual students to obtain necessary samples for their PhD work. The course is dependent on the availability of the vessel. Please contact ARCTOS for more information or send a message describing your interests and needs to Jørgen Berge.

Admission requirements
Maximum 5 participants.PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student, or a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

Objective of the course
Provide the students with insights into scientific sampling methods and sampling protocols.

Teaching methods
The students will carry out their own research projects as part of the cruise. The projects need to be approved by the cruise leader, and needs to be integrated into the general cruise plan.
Assessment
Individual cruise reports (10-20 pages) mandatory after each cruise. Grade: Pass/fail.
