MBI-3002 Pharmacology - 10 stp

The course provides a quantitative description of drug absorption, distribution and elimination. The pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic aspects of the main drug categories will be described and therapeutic medication principles, mechanisms and side-effects will be outlined. The following topics are included:

• Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, (3 hours) repetition from MBI-2005
• Chemical mediators and their receptors, (2 hours)

Drugs affecting major organ systems

• Cardiovascular pharmacology (2 hours)
• Pharmacology of hemostasis (1 hour)
• Gastrointestinal pharmacology (1 hour)
• Endocrine pharmacology (2 hours)
• Pharmacology of the kidney/erectile dysfunction medication/the reproductive system (2 hours)
• Antiinflammatory drugs – peripheral analgesics (2 hours)
• Lung pharmacology (1 hour)

The nervous system

• CNS acting drugs (2 hours)
• Analgesic drugs/General anaesthetic drugs/Local anaesthetics (2 hours)
• Psychopharmacology (antidepressant drugs, anxiolytic drugs, antipsychotic drugs) (3 hours)

Chemotherapy

• Antibacterial drugs (2 hours)
• Drugs used in cancer treatment (2 hours)
• Antiviral drugs (1 hour)
• Antifungal drugs (1 hour)

Pharmacokinetics calculations Lectures 6 hours, exercises 12 hours

3 laboratory days

• Day 1 The practical exercise aims at giving the students an insight into how a modern pharmacology laboratory quantifies of an antiepileptic drug in blood of patients. LC-MS-MS is used in this exercise.
• Day 2 Molecular Modeling of the human D2 dopamine receptor and its interaction with ligands.
• Day 3 Quantification of total and free concentration of drug in blood, and calculation of % F, using ultrafiltration technique and LC-MS-MS.

• Herbal pharmacology (1 hour)

Admission requirements

A bachelor degree in biomedicine or an equivalent bachelor degree. Recommended prerequisites: MBI-2005 General pharmacology and toxicology (not mandatory).The course is suited for biology and chemistry students.

The minimum average grade requirement is:

• C - for bachelor's degree or equivalent issued in Europe, Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand
• B - for bachelor's degree or equivalent issued in all other countries

There is a minimum limit of 5 students for this course. Should there be fewer than 5 students the course will not run. There will be an obligatory meeting in January 2016 for all students who are planning to attend the course where you will get information on weither the course is running or not. Written exam (4 hours). Alphabetical grades (A-F).

Course work requirements

The laboratory journal and pharmacokinetic exercises are mandatory and must be approved before the student can attend the final exam.

Re-sit exam

A re-sit exam/postponed exam will be arranged early in the following semester, for candidates who failed the exam, or who, for valid reasons, were unable to attend. Previous exams here.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
